Job Title: Laboratory Site Lead

Reports to: Hospital Administrator

Direct Subordinates: All Laboratory Staff

Internal: Maintains advisory and consultative relations with Medical and Nursing Services

Departments

External: Blood Bank, Foods & Drugs Authority, External Quality Assurance

Main Purpose of the Role:

The Laboratory Site Lead is responsible for the overall management, coordination, and

leadership of the laboratory services within Nyaho Medical Centre. This position plays a

pivotal role in ensuring the efficient and high-quality operation of the laboratory by

supervising and guiding a team of Biomedical Scientists at various ranks, including Senior

Biomedical Scientists, Principal Biomedical Scientist, Deputy Chief Biomedical Scientists

and Chief Biomedical Scientists.

Functions of the Appointment:

Operational Leadership:

• Oversee and manage the daily operation of the laboratory, ensuring the delivery

of efficient, timely, and high-quality diagnostic services.

• Implement and monitor laboratory policies, procedures, and standards to

maintain a culture of excellence and compliance with relevant regulations.

• Coordinate and allocate tasks among Biomedical Scientists, ensuring appropriate

coverage for laboratory testing and diagnostics.

Team Supervision:

• Lead a multidisciplinary team of Biomedical Scientists at various ranks, providing

guidance, support, and direction to achieve departmental objectives.

• Conduct performance reviews, manage staff development, and assist in

recruitment processes for all laboratory ranks.• Promote a collaborative and respectful work environment that fosters teamwork

and professional growth.

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

• Oversee the implementation of internal and external quality control measures,

ensuring compliance with quality assurance policies and guidelines.

• Collaborate with the laboratory management team to conduct regular quality

control audits and assessments.

• Ensure adherence to health and safety protocols, including proper handling and

disposal of pathological specimens.

Resource Management:

• Manage the allocation of financial and physical resources, including purchase

orders for reagents, consumables, and capital equipment.

• Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment to meet required standards,

including preventive maintenance schedules.

• Assist in the development and management of the laboratory budget and

costings.

Technical Expertise:

• Provide technical guidance and support to Biomedical Scientists in the resolution

of complex laboratory problems and situations.

• Promote the adoption of new diagnostic technologies and techniques,

contributing to research and development activities as needed.

Communication and Reporting:

• Maintain effective communication with the Hospital Administrator, Clinical Care

Division, and other relevant stakeholders.

• Prepare regular and timely reports on laboratory performance, standard

operating procedures, and policies.

• Manage laboratory tours for visiting parties and external agencies, providing

information on laboratory services.

General Management:

• Contribute to the development of departmental operational policies and

standards of customer care.

• Assist in the conduct of laboratory audits, including ensuring compliance with

internal and external quality control measures.

• Promote the code of professional conduct and the Patient's Charter throughout

the laboratory.

Job Holder Specification

Formal Education:

• Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science or Medical Laboratory Science.• Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science or Master's degree in a relevant specialty

(desirable).

• Strong knowledge of diagnostic techniques, quality assurance procedures, and

health and safety protocols.

• Demonstrated management and supervisory experience.

• Proven ability to lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Computer skills and familiarity with relevant software.

• Initiative and the ability to influence others positively.

The Laboratory Site Lead plays a crucial role in ensuring the laboratory's smooth
